Dr. Greg's Ride to Remember PDF Print E-mail
Written by Susan Croudace

Greg Gramelspacher of Wishard Hospital in Marion County, Indiana is a physician to be reckoned with. As Director of the Palliative Care Program at Wishard, Dr. Gramelspacher has witnessed first hand the effects of terminal illness on the uninsured. He’s taking a very public stand on the healthcare issue, and he’s doing it for the patients, families and staff of Wishard. By calling attention to his crusade, Dr. Greg’s efforts will reach far beyond Indiana.

On Monday, September 14th, the good doctor begins a 3,000 mile bike ride – one mile for each patient lost in the last 10 years. Dr. Greg aims to commemorate their lives and let their families and the rest of the world know that Wishard patients are not forgotten. The 40 day ride begins in Santa Barbara and ends in Charleston, South Carolina. You can follow Dr. Greg’s progress by following him on twitter (ggramels) or by accessing his blog.

The Palliative Care Program at Wishard has recently been awarded the Circle of Life Award by the American Hospital Association for its efforts on behalf of the most vulnerable members of society, the terminally ill poor. Palliative care is a medical specialty that provides treatment for the terminally ill.  It aims to reduce the severity of symptoms by limiting pain and suffering. More information about palliative care can be found on the National Institutes of Health website.

thank-you for bringing this to us, Susan. Wow, what an inspiration. Let's all go out on our own 3,000 mile or 3,000 step or 3,000 minute journey to make the changes we can for a brighter future. smilies/wink.gif
